gustave-caillebotte-view-seen-through-a-balcony-fine-art-print
Gustave Caillebotte — View Seen Through a Balcony | Fine Art Print

Black wrought-iron scrollwork fills the canvas: spirals and curling leaves, a fleur-de-lis at the lower centre, a tall upright bar right of centre and a flat dark rail across the top. Through the gaps a boulevard far below appears in pale lilac-pink and grey, with a horse, a few tiny figures and building fronts. A green leaf stem crosses the lower right, and the signature is at the lower left.

Caillebotte used the iron railing of his Parisian balcony to build a view with a dynamic, modern perspective, the wrought-iron curls forming a decorative pattern that fills the whole canvas. The Van Gogh Museum notes that the bold composition was inspired by Japanese printmaking, with its high vantage points, large areas of colour and abrupt cropping, and that Van Gogh asked his brother Theo about Caillebotte's work.

The original: oil on canvas, 1880, Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.

Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894) was a French painter closely tied to the Impressionists, whom he also supported as a collector, buying paintings by Monet, Renoir and Pissarro and helping fund their exhibitions. Trained under Léon Bonnat after a law degree, he painted the streets and boating life of Paris with a sharper, more realist precision than his colleagues, most famously in Paris Street; Rainy Day (1877) and The Floor Scrapers (1875). His work is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, the Musée d'Orsay and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Printed as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
