He drew on myth and scripture for jewelled, dreamlike scenes such as Oedipus and the Sphinx (1864) and The Apparition (1876), in which the severed head of John the Baptist appears to Salome. A teacher at the École des Beaux-Arts, his pupils included Henri Matisse and Georges Rouault.
