Baldung's own coat of arms appears on the wall behind the groom, who also bears some resemblance to portraits of the artist, so the scene may carry an autobiographical reference: a man laid low by forces he cannot resist.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: woodcut, 1544–45; Cleveland Museum of Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHans Baldung Grien (c.1484–1545) was a German painter and printmaker, the most gifted pupil of Albrecht Dürer. Working mainly in Strasbourg, he returned again and again to witches, death and the vanity of beauty, in chiaroscuro woodcuts, drawings and panels such as Death and the Maiden (c.1518–20, Kunstmuseum Basel).
