The Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp now reads it as the mark of a humanist who collected classical coins, and the palm and laurel as allusions to the emblem of Bernardo Bembo, Venetian ambassador at the Burgundian court from 1471 to 1474. The panel was long attributed to Antonello da Messina.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: oil on panel, c. 1474; Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHans Memling (c. 1430–1494) was a painter of German origin, born near Frankfurt, who worked in Flanders. He probably trained in Mainz or Cologne and then in Brussels in the workshop of Rogier van der Weyden, and by 1465 he was a citizen of Bruges, where he ran a large workshop. His clients included clergy, guilds, and merchants and bankers, including an agent of the Medici Bank in Bruges. He painted altarpieces and devotional panels with donor portraits, and portraits set against landscape backgrounds, among them The Last Judgment triptych. His work is held by the Groeningemuseum in Bruges, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery, London.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEach print is a giclée, printed to order.
