One hand holds out a small red apple and the other supports him. A window at the right opens onto a green park, a winding path and a distant town; stained glass above carries a blue shield with gold bars, and a round convex mirror hangs in the dark wall at the left.

The Musea Brugge identifies this as the Virgin's wing of the diptych Maarten van Nieuwenhove commissioned from Memling in 1487, at the age of 23. The Child reaches for the apple in his mother's hand, which the museum reads as his acceptance of the Cross to come. A convex mirror behind the Virgin reflects her seated with the kneeling donor, and the family arms and the motto 'Il y a cause' ('Not without reason') sit at the upper left.

The original: oil on panel, 1487; Museum Sint-Janshospitaal, Bruges.

Hans Memling (c. 1430–1494) was a painter of German origin, born near Frankfurt, who worked in Flanders. He probably trained in Mainz or Cologne and then in Brussels in the workshop of Rogier van der Weyden, and by 1465 he was a citizen of Bruges, where he ran a large workshop. His clients included clergy, guilds, and merchants and bankers, including an agent of the Medici Bank in Bruges. He painted altarpieces and devotional panels with donor portraits, and portraits set against landscape backgrounds, among them The Last Judgment triptych. His work is held by the Groeningemuseum in Bruges, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery, London.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
