The artist's red estate stamp marks the lower left.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHervé's operetta Chilpéric was revived at the Théâtre des Variétés in Paris in February 1895, and Toulouse-Lautrec painted Marcelle Lender performing its bolero. The canvas remained in the artist's estate after his death in 1901, passed from Maurice Joyant to Madame Dortu, and was sold in 1950 to John Hay Whitney and his wife. Their gift of the painting to the National Gallery of Art in Washington was completed in 1998.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: oil on canvas, 1895–1896, National Gallery of Art, Washington.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHenri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901) made the poster an art form. From 1891 his lithographs for the Moulin Rouge, Aristide Bruant, Jane Avril and the Divan Japonais turned Montmartre's performers into silhouettes and flat planes of colour learned from Japanese prints, and they were pasted across Paris by the thousand. He drew the cabarets, circuses and brothels of the city with unsentimental affection.
