In 1902 the Cincinnati Commercial Tribune reported that the painter and Roosevelt were old friends who had hunted together in the far West when Roosevelt was known only as an amateur sportsman and an outdoor writer.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHenry Farny (1847–1916) was a French-born American painter and illustrator. Born in Ribeauvillé, Alsace, he emigrated with his family in 1853 to Warren, Pennsylvania, where he came to know Seneca people, and moved to Cincinnati about 1859. He worked as an engraver and cartoonist for Harper's in New York and studied in Rome, Düsseldorf and Munich. In 1881 he went up the Missouri River to the Standing Rock Agency on the Great Sioux Reservation, sketching, photographing and collecting objects, the first of several trips west. Most of his oils date from after 1893; The Song of the Talking Wire (1904) shows a hunter leaning on a telegraph pole.
