Beside him a bearded man in a white turban and a green and pink robe looks down at the crowd, and men watch from a doorway at the left. Below, armed men in helmets with halberds and a lit torch, and gesturing men in green and pink cloaks, press toward the platform. A pale city square lies behind.

The Städel Museum's text says a donor family commissioned the panel and was shown in the lower corners; those passages were damaged and overpainted early, and the surviving remnants were uncovered only recently. An X-ray in 1983 revealed an earlier donor family beneath the foreground. When the museum bought it at the 1917 Kaufmann auction, the overpainting had given Christ a long garment, and restoration returned the loincloth.

The original: mixed technique on oak panel, c. 1490; Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main.

Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450–1516), born Jheronimus van Aken, was a Netherlandish painter who spent his life in 's-Hertogenbosch in Brabant, the town that gave him his name. The son and grandson of painters, he belonged to the town's Brotherhood of Our Lady. His paintings turn religious and moral themes into crowded scenes of temptation, folly and damnation filled with hybrid creatures, most fully in the triptychs The Garden of Earthly Delights, The Haywain and The Temptation of St Anthony. Only about 25 paintings are now confidently given to him. His work was copied in his lifetime, and Pieter Bruegel the Elder was his best-known follower. His paintings are held by the Museo del Prado, the National Gallery of Art, Washington and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
