hugo-simberg-the-wounded-angel-art-print
Hugo Simberg — The Wounded Angel | Art Print

Two boys carry a fair-haired angel on a stretcher of two poles along a sandy path. She sits slumped in a white gown, eyes bound with a white bandage, a red mark on one wing, a few white flowers in her hand. The boy in front wears black and a bowler hat; the boy behind, in a brown jacket, turns to look straight out. Behind them a brown meadow runs to grey-blue water and hills. Signed and dated at lower right.

Simberg painted it in 1903, after a bout of meningitis, and the picture is said to have been a source of strength during his recovery. It was shown that autumn at the Ateneum exhibition and praised by fellow Finnish artists. He painted a larger version as a fresco in Tampere Cathedral in 1905–06, and in 2006 an Ateneum public vote named it Finland's national painting.

Hugo Simberg (1873–1917) was a Finnish Symbolist painter and printmaker. His gentle, folk-tale visions of Death and devils — the gardener of Death tending his plants, a small devil warming himself by a fire — are among the best-loved images in Finnish art. The Wounded Angel (1903), in which two boys carry a blindfolded angel on a stretcher, was voted Finland's national painting in 2006; it hangs in the Ateneum, Helsinki.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
