Ink is layered in fast, angular strokes that leave streaks of unpainted silk showing through the branches. A vertical column of signature characters and two red seals, one square and one round, sit at the right, below the lower branch.

The original: a hanging scroll, ink and color on silk, Japan, 1800, held by the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Itō Jakuchū (1716–1800) was a Kyoto painter of the mid-Edo period, and many of his paintings depict roosters, hens and other birds. The eldest son of a grocer in the city's Nishiki food district, he took over the family shop in 1739 and gave it up in 1756 to devote himself to painting. He based his work on close observation, and gave a set of thirty hanging scrolls, the Colorful Realm of Living Beings, to the temple Shōkoku-ji. His work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Printed as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
