Leyendecker — Giving Thanks (Thanksgiving Couple) | Vintage Thanksgiving Print

A Pilgrim man and woman stand side by side before a large yellow disc on a white ground. He wears a tall black hat with a buckle, a white collar and a dark coat, and carries a flintlock gun with a flared muzzle over his shoulder, glancing sideways; she wears a black cap with a broad white band and a wide white collar over a pale grey dress, eyes lowered. Dried corn stalks with ears of maize rise behind them and spill across a heavy black base line.

J. C. Leyendecker (1874–1951) was a German-born American illustrator of magazine covers and advertisements. Born in Montabaur, he grew up in Chicago, studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Académie Julian in Paris, and moved to New York in 1902. He painted 322 covers for The Saturday Evening Post and 80 for Collier's; the Post covers popularised the New Year Baby and the plump, red-coated Santa Claus. His Arrow shirt and collar advertisements created the Arrow Collar Man. His friend Norman Rockwell drew heavily on his example. The largest public collection of his originals is at the Haggin Museum in Stockton, California.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
