Grandville — Peregrinations d'une comete | Engraving Print

A comet appears as a tall woman whose head is a blazing red star, her long cream gown sweeping in a crescent train carried by tiny star-headed pages. Around her the black sky is hung with chandeliers of coloured planets and stars, a ringed planet at the top centre, three crowned smiling suns at the left and rows of lamp-post stars beyond. Below, three horses with glowing heads draw a starry chariot and a radiant hare runs. The title is printed beneath in capitals.

J. J. Grandville (1803–1847), born Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard, was a French caricaturist and illustrator who worked in Paris. He made his reputation with the lithograph series Les Métamorphoses du jour (1829) and illustrated editions of La Fontaine's Fables, Robinson Crusoe and Gulliver's Travels; his 1844 book Un Autre Monde, filled with dreamlike, fantastical imagery, is regarded as his major work. His prints and drawings are held by the Louvre, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
