Grey cloud breaks to blue above.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eJacob van Ruisdael (c. 1629–1682) was the outstanding landscape painter of the Dutch Golden Age. Working first in Haarlem and from 1656 in Amsterdam, he gave the flat Dutch country its weight and weather: towering cloud, a single shaft of light on a field of wheat, watermills, ruined castles and the long panoramas of bleaching grounds. Constable and the Barbizon painters studied him closely.
