He looks out at the viewer, a white headband in his curled fair hair, a blue cloak edged in gold across his hips and an upright spear in his raised hand. A gold quiver and a horn lie behind them, and a white animal's head appears at the lower right, against dark rock.

The J. Paul Getty Museum says David painted this farewell during his exile in Brussels, taking the subject from Fenelon's 1699 novel about Telemachus and the nymph Eucharis. It describes the saturated reds and blues set against flesh tones, and the clarity of line and form, as typical of David's late history paintings.

The original: oil on canvas, 1818; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

Jacques-Louis David (1748–1825) was a French Neoclassical painter, born in Paris. He trained under François Boucher and then Joseph-Marie Vien, won the Prix de Rome in 1774, and spent five years in Italy studying antique sculpture and seventeenth-century masters. His large history paintings, such as Oath of the Horatii and The Death of Marat, replaced Rococo decoration with an austere, sculptural clarity that came to define Neoclassicism and, later, the visual language of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Empire; he died in exile in Brussels after the Bourbon Restoration. His paintings are held by the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Kimbell Art Museum.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
