Babies sprawl at her feet, and another woman lifts an infant high on a stone block. Horsemen and a forest of lances crowd the right, with crenellated towers, banners and a cloudy sky behind.

The Louvre records that David began this picture without any commission and finished it in autumn 1799. It was shown from 21 December 1799 in a paid exhibition, set before a large mirror, with an entry price of 1.80 francs. Louis XVIII's household bought it in 1819 together with Leonidas at Thermopylae, and it entered the Louvre in 1826.

The original: oil on canvas, 1799; Musee du Louvre, Paris.

Jacques-Louis David (1748–1825) was a French Neoclassical painter, born in Paris. He trained under François Boucher and then Joseph-Marie Vien, won the Prix de Rome in 1774, and spent five years in Italy studying antique sculpture and seventeenth-century masters. His large history paintings, such as Oath of the Horatii and The Death of Marat, replaced Rococo decoration with an austere, sculptural clarity that came to define Neoclassicism and, later, the visual language of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Empire; he died in exile in Brussels after the Bourbon Restoration. His paintings are held by the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Kimbell Art Museum.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
