Mid-eighteenth-century ragamala sets flattened architecture into bold patterns, and the portraitist Sahibram painted near life-size portraits on cloth for five successive rulers. The school reached its height under Pratap Singh (r. 1778–1803), a poet and connoisseur, whose workshop produced a Bhagavata Purana of 1792 with 366 illustrations, a long Ramayana and a Devi Mahatmya of 1799. After 1818 painters left in search of other work, and later rulers turned to Western art and photography.
