The avant-garde group Les XX rejected it, and it stayed in his house in Ostend; it was first exhibited in 1929, in Brussels. It has been in the J. Trained at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels (1877–80), he lived and worked for most of his life in the seaside town of Ostend. He painted carnival masks, skeletons and crowd scenes in a style that moved from Symbolism toward Expressionism, most famously in Christ's Entry into Brussels in 1889 (1888).
