Trained at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels (1877–80), he lived and worked for most of his life in the seaside town of Ostend. He painted carnival masks, skeletons and crowd scenes in a style that moved from Symbolism toward Expressionism, most famously in Christ's Entry into Brussels in 1889 (1888).
