After years in Italy, where Cardinal Federico Borromeo became his patron, he settled in Antwerp and made his name with minutely painted flower pieces, wooded landscapes and fiery visions of the underworld. A close friend of Rubens, he often painted the settings and flowers in their joint pictures.
