In 1612 he married Elisabeth de Hondt, daughter of the cartographer Jodocus Hondius, and joined the Hondius family business; he published his first maps, of France and Italy, in 1616. From the 1630s he issued new editions of the Mercator-Hondius atlases and expanded them into the multi-volume Atlas Maior, which by 1660 ran to eleven volumes and included an atlas of city plans.
