Her bodice is grainy blue crayon, and blue is worked over the tan paper around her, with a rayed sun at the upper left and pale peaks and a tower sketched at the right. Construction lines curve open below her shoulders.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eJan Toorop (1858–1928) was a central figure in Dutch art between Van Gogh and Mondrian. Born in Java and trained in Amsterdam and Brussels, where he joined the avant-garde group Les XX, he moved through Impressionism and Pointillism to a Symbolist style of rhythmic lines drawing partly on Javanese motifs, and his 1894 poster for Delftsche Slaolie gave Dutch Art Nouveau its nickname, the slaoliestijl. After converting to Catholicism in 1905 he made religious works, posters, book designs and stained glass.
