Beekbergen | Vintage Poster Print

A winged woman in a long pale-yellow gown stands at the centre, head bowed, framed by an oval of waving hair, her open hands held low. At her feet two gaunt unclothed men sit cross-legged and look up, one clasping his shoulder, the other with hands pressed together. Between them two small green labourers dig in framed panels, flanked by saws, shears, pincers, spades and hammers. Two trees carry white birds, and capital lettering at top and foot names the place. A JT monogram sits at lower left.

The original: colour lithograph, 1896; Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

Jan Toorop (1858–1928) was a central figure in Dutch art between Van Gogh and Mondrian. Born in Java and trained in Amsterdam and Brussels, where he joined the avant-garde group Les XX, he moved through Impressionism and Pointillism to a Symbolist style of rhythmic lines drawing partly on Javanese motifs, and his 1894 poster for Delftsche Slaolie gave Dutch Art Nouveau its nickname, the slaoliestijl. After converting to Catholicism in 1905 he made religious works, posters, book designs and stained glass. His work is held by the Rijksmuseum, the Kröller-Müller Museum and the Kunstmuseum Den Haag.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
