A white dove glows at the top above spired towns and wooded hills.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe altarpiece was first set up on 6 May 1432 in the chapel of Joos Vijd and Elisabeth Borluut in Saint Bavo's Cathedral; the verses on its frame say Hubert van Eyck began the work and his brother Jan finished it at Vijd's request. A restoration in 1951 found that the Lamb had once been painted with four ears, the extra pair covered over around 1550. French troops took the altarpiece to Paris after 1789, and it was hidden in an Austrian salt mine in the Second World War.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eJan van Eyck (c. 1380\/1390–1441) was a Flemish painter of the early Netherlandish school, born in Maaseik in the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. His training is undocumented. He worked at the court of John III of Bavaria in The Hague, then as court painter to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in Lille, and from 1429 lived in Bruges. He is known for the Ghent Altarpiece, completed in 1432 with his brother Hubert, for the Arnolfini Portrait (1434), and for detailed, naturalistic panels painted in oil glazes, often signed with the motto ALS ICH KAN. His work is held by the National Gallery, London, the Louvre and the Groeningemuseum in Bruges.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEach print is a giclée, printed to order.
