jan-van-eyck-lucca-madonna-fine-art-print
Jan van Eyck — Lucca Madonna | Fine Art Print

The Virgin sits on a canopied throne with gilded lion finials, her huge red robe, hemmed in gold and jewels, spilling over the step onto a patterned carpet. She bends over the Child held to her breast. Behind her hangs a green and gold patterned cloth. At left an arched window holds two orange fruits on its sill; at right a glass carafe stands on a shelf above a copper basin, with blue tiles underfoot.

The Städel Museum finds an intimacy in this panel unmatched in Jan van Eyck's other work, achieved through the tender mother-and-child pairing, light and shade, and an apparently casual but highly sophisticated handling of space. The floor, side walls and vaulted ceiling seem to extend into the viewer's room, and the window is reflected in the glass carafe at right.

The original: mixed technique on oak panel, about 1437; Städel Museum, Frankfurt.

Jan van Eyck (c. 1380/1390–1441) was a Flemish painter of the early Netherlandish school, born in Maaseik in the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. His training is undocumented. He worked at the court of John III of Bavaria in The Hague, then as court painter to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in Lille, and from 1429 lived in Bruges. He is known for the Ghent Altarpiece, completed in 1432 with his brother Hubert, for the Arnolfini Portrait (1434), and for detailed, naturalistic panels painted in oil glazes, often signed with the motto ALS ICH KAN. His work is held by the National Gallery, London, the Louvre and the Groeningemuseum in Bruges.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
