jan-van-eyck-madonna-at-the-fountain-fine-art-print
Jan van Eyck — Madonna at the Fountain | Fine Art Print

The Madonna, in a deep blue mantle with a jewelled band in her loose hair, bends her cheek to the infant Child, who is wrapped in white cloth at the hips and curls an arm round her neck, a string of beads hanging from his other hand. Behind her, a red cloth woven with gold foliage and small dark animals is held up by two angels with rainbow-striped wings. A gilded fountain stands at the left, with a rose hedge and a brick wall behind.

The panel is signed and dated 1439 on its painted frame, with the artist's personal motto, two years before his death. At only 19 by 12 centimetres it was probably made for private prayer, and its earliest verifiable home is a village in East Flanders. The fountain refers to the Virgin, praised as a fountain in the Song of Solomon.

The original: oil on panel, 1439; Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA), Antwerp.

Jan van Eyck (c. 1380/1390–1441) was a Flemish painter of the early Netherlandish school, born in Maaseik in the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. His training is undocumented. He worked at the court of John III of Bavaria in The Hague, then as court painter to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in Lille, and from 1429 lived in Bruges. He is known for the Ghent Altarpiece, completed in 1432 with his brother Hubert, for the Arnolfini Portrait (1434), and for detailed, naturalistic panels painted in oil glazes, often signed with the motto ALS ICH KAN. His work is held by the National Gallery, London, the Louvre and the Groeningemuseum in Bruges.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
