At left a bishop in a blue brocade cope and mitre holds a crozier and a small wheel set with candles. At right an armoured saint with a white banner lifts his helmet beside a kneeling elderly canon in a white surplice who holds a pair of spectacles. Arches, a patterned carpet and a tiled floor frame the group.

Joris van der Paele, a canon of the church of St Donatian in Bruges, is named in the inscriptions as the patron who commissioned the panel from Van Eyck. Musea Brugge calls it the artist's largest surviving work after the Ghent Altarpiece and singles out the razor-sharp detail, above all the reflections in the saint's helmet and armour.

The original: oil on oak panel, 1436; Groeningemuseum, Bruges.

Jan van Eyck (c. 1380/1390–1441) was a Flemish painter of the early Netherlandish school, born in Maaseik in the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. His training is undocumented. He worked at the court of John III of Bavaria in The Hague, then as court painter to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in Lille, and from 1429 lived in Bruges. He is known for the Ghent Altarpiece, completed in 1432 with his brother Hubert, for the Arnolfini Portrait (1434), and for detailed, naturalistic panels painted in oil glazes, often signed with the motto ALS ICH KAN. His work is held by the National Gallery, London, the Louvre and the Groeningemuseum in Bruges.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
