A white pleated linen headdress falls to her shoulders over two horned caps of brown and gold, and a grey fur collar shows at her neck. She wears a red gown with deep folds, gathered at the waist by a broad green band. Fine cracks cover the surface of the paint.

The inscription is written as though the sitter were speaking: Margareta says that her husband, Jan van Eyck, completed her in 1439, at the age of thirty-three. Musea Brugge notes that Van Eyck painted the frame and the back of the panel to resemble marble, which is why the portrait is displayed free-standing, with both sides visible rather than hung against a wall.

The original: oil on oak, 1439; Groeningemuseum, Bruges.

Jan van Eyck (c. 1380/1390–1441) was a Flemish painter of the early Netherlandish school, born in Maaseik in the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. His training is undocumented. He worked at the court of John III of Bavaria in The Hague, then as court painter to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in Lille, and from 1429 lived in Bruges. He is known for the Ghent Altarpiece, completed in 1432 with his brother Hubert, for the Arnolfini Portrait (1434), and for detailed, naturalistic panels painted in oil glazes, often signed with the motto ALS ICH KAN. His work is held by the National Gallery, London, the Louvre and the Groeningemuseum in Bruges.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
