A small brown dog stands between them at the front. Behind hang a brass chandelier, a round convex mirror in a studded frame and a line of script; a red bed stands at the right, a window at the left and wooden clogs lie on the floor.

The National Gallery bought the panel in 1842 for 600 guineas, the first Netherlandish painting to enter its collection. A Latin inscription above the convex mirror states that Jan van Eyck was there in 1434, and the mirror reflects two men entering the room behind the couple. The museum asks whether those two are the painter and a servant, and describes the sitters only as probably the Italian merchant Giovanni Arnolfini and his wife.

The original: oil on wood, 1434; The National Gallery, London.

Jan van Eyck (c. 1380/1390–1441) was a Flemish painter of the early Netherlandish school, born in Maaseik in the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. His training is undocumented. He worked at the court of John III of Bavaria in The Hague, then as court painter to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in Lille, and from 1429 lived in Bruges. He is known for the Ghent Altarpiece, completed in 1432 with his brother Hubert, for the Arnolfini Portrait (1434), and for detailed, naturalistic panels painted in oil glazes, often signed with the motto ALS ICH KAN. His work is held by the National Gallery, London, the Louvre and the Groeningemuseum in Bruges.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
