She wears a white cap wound with an orange-red cloth, its end trailing at her shoulder, a rust-orange gown with a fur-trimmed collar and a dark striped shawl; grey-and-white striped sleeves end in yellow-fringed cuffs. Her hands hold a slim bundle of thin sticks across her lap. Pale blue sky and soft cloud open to the right.

The Art Institute of Chicago notes that the traditional title comes from an engraving made after the painting for sale to a wider audience. It is one of several small figure paintings by Watteau in which the costume was inspired by contemporary theatre; here the woman's pseudo-Turkish dress reflects the Western European fashion for Turkish culture known as turquerie.

The original: oil on panel, 1712–14; Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago.

Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684–1721) was a French painter born in Valenciennes who came to Paris about 1702 and worked first for theatre-scene and decorative painters. In 1717 the Royal Academy accepted his Pilgrimage to the Island of Cythera under a category created for him, the fête galante: elegant couples, actors of the Italian comedy and music-making in parkland. His small, shimmering paintings opened the Rococo and shaped French art for a generation. He died of tuberculosis at thirty-six. His work is held by the Louvre, the Wallace Collection and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
