It hung in the Academy's assembly room at the Louvre through the whole eighteenth century and was seized with the Academy's collections in 1795. The Louvre catalogues it as Pèlerinage à l'île de Cythère, with L'embarquement pour Cythère as the alternative title.

The original: oil on canvas, 1717; Musée du Louvre, Paris.

Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684–1721) was a French painter born in Valenciennes who came to Paris about 1702 and worked first for theatre-scene and decorative painters. In 1717 the Royal Academy accepted his Pilgrimage to the Island of Cythera under a category created for him, the fête galante: elegant couples, actors of the Italian comedy and music-making in parkland. His small, shimmering paintings opened the Rococo and shaped French art for a generation. He died of tuberculosis at thirty-six. His work is held by the Louvre, the Wallace Collection and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
