A woman in a blue satin gown gazes upward with a white handkerchief in her hand; beside her a man in a silver-embroidered doublet with pink sashes, red boots and a black hat with white plumes stands with a hand on his hip. At the left a woman bows her face into her arms, one figure turns away in brown, and a stout man in a white ruff leans at the right.

The original: oil on canvas, about 1720; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684–1721) was a French painter born in Valenciennes who came to Paris about 1702 and worked first for theatre-scene and decorative painters. In 1717 the Royal Academy accepted his Pilgrimage to the Island of Cythera under a category created for him, the fête galante: elegant couples, actors of the Italian comedy and music-making in parkland. His small, shimmering paintings opened the Rococo and shaped French art for a generation. He died of tuberculosis at thirty-six. His work is held by the Louvre, the Wallace Collection and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
