He worked on it for three years, pausing during the sitter's pregnancy, and made some eighty preparatory drawings before signing and dating it 1845. Louise de Broglie, granddaughter of Madame de Staël and herself a published writer, valued it so highly that her will ranked it second only to the family château at Coppet. The Frick bought it in 1927.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eJean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780–1867) was a French Neoclassical painter, born in Montauban. He entered the studio of Jacques-Louis David in 1797 and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, absorbing and then extending his teacher's Neoclassicism toward an art built on precise, flowing line, on the conviction that drawing was the essential discipline of painting. His portraits and history paintings prize contour and finish over anatomical strictness, producing an elegance of form against which Delacroix and the Romantics defined themselves.
