He entered the studio of Jacques-Louis David in 1797 and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, absorbing and then extending his teacher's Neoclassicism toward an art built on precise, flowing line, on the conviction that drawing was the essential discipline of painting. His portraits and history paintings prize contour and finish over anatomical strictness, producing an elegance of form against which Delacroix and the Romantics defined themselves.
