She looks down at a hand mirror lying on the floor at lower left. A small white dog stands near the table, which holds pearls, a red box and a round hat box, and a sewing basket with yarn spills at lower right.

The Wallace Collection describes the picture as one of Greuze's modern moral genre subjects, in which the disorder of the room echoes the state of the girl herself. Its high finish and attention to different surfaces recall Dutch genre scenes by Mieris and Metsu. It belonged to Boucher's friend and patron Randon de Boisset, who refused to lend it to the Salon of 1763 although it was listed in the catalogue.

The original: oil on canvas, 1762; Wallace Collection, London.

Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725–1805) was a French painter from Tournus, in Burgundy, who made his name at the Paris Salon of 1755 with moralising scenes of family life. Praised by the critic Denis Diderot as a painter of virtue, he produced domestic dramas such as The Village Bride and The Broken Pitcher, and a long series of expressive heads of young people. Refused a place among the history painters by the Royal Academy in 1769, he exhibited independently for the rest of his career. His paintings are held by the Louvre, the Wallace Collection and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
