jean-bourdichon-the-nativity-illuminated-manuscript-print
Jean Bourdichon — The Nativity | Illuminated Manuscript Print

The Virgin kneels in a blue mantle hatched with gold, her hands together, before the infant Christ, who lies on the ground in a burst of gold rays. Joseph, white-bearded in a brown robe, lifts his cap from his head. Gold beams fall through the broken roof of a dark timber stable, and a starry blue night shows through the gaps. Below, five lines of script open with a blue initial holding white flowers, and a border of bare brown branches, blue and red flowers and strawberries surrounds the page.

The miniature opens the prayers for Prime in the Hours of the Virgin; the script beneath it is a verse from Psalm 69 asking for God's help. The museum points to the way the painter joined the old taste for gold with close study of real light: rays pierce the roof, and more shine out from the child onto the clothes of Mary and Joseph. The book holds some of his earliest work.

The original: a leaf from the Katherine Hours, a book of hours in tempera colours, gold and ink on parchment, made in Tours about 1480–1485; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

Jean Bourdichon (1457–1521) served for nearly forty years as court painter to four French kings, Louis XI, Charles VIII, Louis XII and François I, designing stained glass, coins and gold plate as well as painting panels and illuminating manuscripts. Charles VIII set up a workshop for him in his castle at Plessis-lès-Tours. Almost certainly a pupil of Jean Fouquet, from whom he learned the principles of Italian Renaissance painting, he is known today chiefly through his manuscripts, among them a book of hours in the J. Paul Getty Museum, his earliest surviving work.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
