jean-honore-fragonard-a-boy-as-pierrot-fine-art-print
Jean-Honoré Fragonard — A Boy as Pierrot | Fine Art Print

A fair-haired boy with blue eyes and rosy cheeks looks straight out, his arms folded across his chest. He wears a flat white hat banded and bowed in blue, a frilled white collar and a loose white blouse scattered with pink and pale blue rosettes, with blue-edged cuffs at the folded arms. Soft, feathery brushwork sets him against a hazy blue-grey ground.

The Wallace Collection calls this a portrait de fantaisie of a boy in a theatre costume too large for his age, adapting the Dutch costumed head study to the world of the Commedia dell'Arte and the fête galante. It says Fragonard also aims to evoke the feel of a pastel, and that the painting once had a pendant of a girl in a pearl necklace, now in Los Angeles.

The original: oil on canvas, c. 1785; Wallace Collection, London.

Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806) was a French painter, a pupil of Chardin and Boucher, who won the Prix de Rome in 1752 and spent several years in Italy. Rather than pursue an academic career he painted for private collectors: playful scenes of love and courtship such as The Swing, quick 'fantasy figures' brushed in an hour, landscapes and family scenes. His loose, rapid handling made him the last great painter of the Rococo; the Revolution ended his market. His work is held by the Wallace Collection, the Louvre and the Frick Collection.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
