Rather than pursue an academic career he painted for private collectors: playful scenes of love and courtship such as The Swing, quick 'fantasy figures' brushed in an hour, landscapes and family scenes. His loose, rapid handling made him the last great painter of the Rococo; the Revolution ended his market.
