jean-honore-fragonard-the-fountain-of-love-fine-art-print
Jean-Honoré Fragonard — The Fountain of Love | Fine Art Print

A young man and woman hurry through a dark wood toward a stone fountain, their toes just reaching the edge of its basin. She wears a sheer white gown and runs with her hair streaming; he leans in beside her, a wreath of small flowers in his hair. At the left a crowd of winged putti gathers in a cloud of spray, one holding out a gold cup, others tumbling in the water below. Light falls on the figures while the trees stay in deep brown-green shadow.

The J. Paul Getty Museum reads this as the old Garden of Love allegory, in which the fountain's water is where Cupid dips his arrows and where lovers drink and fall in love. Eighteenth-century painters had mostly turned the theme into flirtation among lovers in contemporary dress; the museum says Fragonard returned it to its classical origins and gave the figures a soft, steamy atmosphere.

The original: oil on canvas, about 1785; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806) was a French painter, a pupil of Chardin and Boucher, who won the Prix de Rome in 1752 and spent several years in Italy. Rather than pursue an academic career he painted for private collectors: playful scenes of love and courtship such as The Swing, quick 'fantasy figures' brushed in an hour, landscapes and family scenes. His loose, rapid handling made him the last great painter of the Rococo; the Revolution ended his market. His work is held by the Wallace Collection, the Louvre and the Frick Collection.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
