jean-honore-fragonard-the-swing-fine-art-print
Jean-Honoré Fragonard — The Swing | Fine Art Print

A young woman in a ruffled pink dress and straw hat swings through a dim green garden, one leg thrust forward so that her shoe flies off. At the lower left a young man in a pale grey suit lies in the shrubbery, hat in his outstretched hand, looking up at her. At the right an older man in a dark coat hauls on the ropes from deep shadow, a small white dog at his feet. Stone putti watch from the left and from a fountain at the right.

The Wallace Collection records that in 1767 the dramatist Charles Collé reported a gentleman of the court asking Gabriel-François Doyen to paint his young mistress on a swing pushed by a bishop. Doyen refused and suggested Fragonard, who made the older man a layman and added a barking dog and Falconet's sculpture of Menacing Love. The museum says the painting relaunched Fragonard's career with works for a small, well-informed circle.

The original: oil on canvas, c. 1767-1768; Wallace Collection, London.

Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806) was a French painter, a pupil of Chardin and Boucher, who won the Prix de Rome in 1752 and spent several years in Italy. Rather than pursue an academic career he painted for private collectors: playful scenes of love and courtship such as The Swing, quick 'fantasy figures' brushed in an hour, landscapes and family scenes. His loose, rapid handling made him the last great painter of the Rococo; the Revolution ended his market. His work is held by the Wallace Collection, the Louvre and the Frick Collection.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
