jean-honore-fragonard-young-girl-reading-fine-art-print
Jean-Honoré Fragonard — Young Girl Reading | Fine Art Print

A girl seen in profile leans against a plump lavender-pink cushion, her head bent over a small red-bound book held in one raised hand. Her hair is gathered in a bun with a lilac bow, and a white ruffled collar tied with lilac ribbon frames her neck. The gown is a glowing yellow with ribbon bows and white cuffs, set against a dark olive wall and an ochre column at the right. Thick, rapid strokes build the folds of the silk.

X-rays show that Fragonard first painted a different head on this canvas, one looking toward the viewer, and then painted it over. The picture belongs to his group of quickly painted fantasy figures, and the sitter is unknown. It was in Alfred W. Erickson's New York collection by 1930 and entered the National Gallery of Art in 1961 as a gift of Mrs. Mellon Bruce in memory of her father, Andrew W. Mellon; the museum showed it in Fragonard: The Fantasy Figures in 2017.

The original: oil on canvas, c. 1769; National Gallery of Art, Washington.

Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806) was a French painter, a pupil of Chardin and Boucher, who won the Prix de Rome in 1752 and spent several years in Italy. Rather than pursue an academic career he painted for private collectors: playful scenes of love and courtship such as The Swing, quick 'fantasy figures' brushed in an hour, landscapes and family scenes. His loose, rapid handling made him the last great painter of the Rococo; the Revolution ended his market. His work is held by the Wallace Collection, the Louvre and the Frick Collection.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
