The large red carpet hangs over the parapet behind, above a band of blue floral tiles. On the parapet above, a man in a white turban lies full length, chin on his folded arms, looking down between two tall bronze columns, and helmeted guards stand with spears raised against a blue sky, snow-capped mountains and dark trees.

The original: Oil on canvas; The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant (1845–1902) was a French painter, born in Paris and raised in Toulouse, who studied under Alexandre Cabanel. A journey to Morocco in 1872 shaped the richly coloured Orientalist interiors and figures that made his name; he later became a celebrated portraitist, painted decorative ceilings for the Sorbonne and the Hôtel de Ville in Paris, and taught at the Académie Julian.
