Gérôme is painted on the stone block at right.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eJean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) was a French academic painter and sculptor, and one of the most celebrated and successful artists of the Second Empire. Trained under Paul Delaroche, he painted historical and mythological scenes, Orientalist subjects from his travels in Egypt and the Near East, and detailed genre scenes such as Pollice Verso (1872, now in the Phoenix Art Museum) and Truth Coming Out of Her Well (1896, now in the Musée Anne-de-Beaujeu, Moulins). He taught for decades at the École des Beaux-Arts, where more than 2,000 students passed through his atelier between 1864 and 1904, including Mary Cassatt and Thomas Eakins.
