Far below, long columns of horsemen wind across the flat plain toward bare ochre hills and a pointed peak. The sky is a clear blue with thin white cloud, and tufts of dry scrub dot the slope. The signature J.L. Gérôme is painted at the lower edge.

The original: Oil on canvas, c. 1888; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) was a French academic painter and sculptor, and one of the most celebrated and successful artists of the Second Empire. Trained under Paul Delaroche, he painted historical and mythological scenes, Orientalist subjects from his travels in Egypt and the Near East, and detailed genre scenes such as Pollice Verso (1872, now in the Phoenix Art Museum) and Truth Coming Out of Her Well (1896, now in the Musée Anne-de-Beaujeu, Moulins). He taught for decades at the École des Beaux-Arts, where more than 2,000 students passed through his atelier between 1864 and 1904, including Mary Cassatt and Thomas Eakins. His paintings are also held by the Musée d'Orsay, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Walters Art Museum.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
