Of his thirteen surviving pastel self-portraits, the most famous are versions of this composition. It was made alongside a portrait of his wife for the 1775 Salon, and a year later he replicated the pair; the two were reunited in Chicago after nearly two hundred years.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: pastel on blue laid paper, laid down on canvas, c. 1776; Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eJean-Siméon Chardin (1699–1779) was a French painter who spent his life in Paris. Admitted to the Royal Academy in 1728 as a painter of animals and fruit, he became the century's great master of still life — kitchen vessels, game and fruit painted with a grainy, luminous touch — and from the 1730s of quiet domestic scenes of servants, mothers and children at their tasks. Late in life he turned to pastel portraits, including his celebrated self-portraits.
