jean-simeon-chardin-the-white-tablecloth-fine-art-print
Jean-Siméon Chardin — The White Tablecloth | Fine Art Print

A round table draped in a white cloth fills the centre, set with a flared glass of red wine, a second glass lying on its side, a pewter plate of sliced sausage, a cut loaf and a knife whose handle juts over the edge. At the left a lidded wooden pail holds a blue-and-white cup and a dark bottle, and a white napkin falls over the right side of the table. The ground is a deep brown, with a warmer floor.

The Art Institute of Chicago says this early still life borrows motifs common in seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish painting, including the foreshortened knife with its handle over the table's edge, the overturned glass and the remains of a meal. The unusual shape reveals its original function as a screen for a fireplace opening: seen at floor level, it would have looked like a table set back into the hearth.

The original: oil on canvas, c. 1731–32; Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago.

Jean-Siméon Chardin (1699–1779) was a French painter who spent his life in Paris. Admitted to the Royal Academy in 1728 as a painter of animals and fruit, he became the century's great master of still life — kitchen vessels, game and fruit painted with a grainy, luminous touch — and from the 1730s of quiet domestic scenes of servants, mothers and children at their tasks. Late in life he turned to pastel portraits, including his celebrated self-portraits. His work is held by the Louvre, the National Gallery of Art, Washington and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
