Setting aside the Chinese landscape conventions of his day, Jeong Seon built his pictures from actual Korean scenery, and this is the largest of his many views of these mountains. Journeys to the Diamond Mountains (Geumgangsan) in 1711 and 1712 produced albums that made his name, and he went on to serve as a district magistrate and to receive court rank from King Yeongjo. He is credited as the father of true-view landscape painting, which pictured real Korean places rather than idealised Chinese scenery, with bold brushwork, layered ink washes and dotted vegetation. His best-known works include General View of Mount Geumgang (1734) and Clearing after Rain on Mount Inwang (1751).
