joaquin-sorolla-the-pool-alcazar-of-seville-fine-art-print
Joaquín Sorolla — The Pool, Alcázar of Seville | Fine Art Print

A long pool fills the foreground, its blue water streaked with white and washed with purple and green reflections, with the row of terracotta pots along its edge mirrored in it. Behind the pots, a white wall with a terracotta-coloured pillar stands beside a leafy tree, and yellow shrubs, pale blossoms and dark hedges fill the garden. A pale blue-grey sky with soft clouds shows above. A signature and a date are inscribed at the lower right.

Sorolla first painted the gardens of the Alcázar of Seville in 1908, and they became the start of the garden pictures that grew into one of the main strands of his work. In this canvas of 1910 he crops the pool off-centre and from slightly above, so that the water and the reflected pots become the subject. It was among the paintings sent to his 1911 exhibitions in Chicago and St. Louis.

The original: oil on canvas, 1910, Museo Sorolla, Madrid.

Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) was the painter of Spanish sunlight. From the 1890s he worked on the beaches of Valencia, painting bathers, fishermen, sails and children in the surf with a broad, rapid touch that caught the glare of the Mediterranean, and his exhibitions in Paris, London and New York made him one of the most celebrated painters of his day. His last great work was the Vision of Spain for the Hispanic Society of America. His paintings are held by the Museo Sorolla in Madrid, the Prado and the Hispanic Society.

Printed as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
