Trained at the academy in The Hague, he worked mainly in wood engraving until about 1900 before taking up other print techniques, depicting farmworkers, dyke workers, tramps and beggars, and later visionary work with apocalyptic scenes. He taught in The Hague and succeeded Pieter Dupont as professor at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, and also made sculptures as studies for his prints.
