The street is Vlamingstraat 40-42 in Delft, and Vermeer's aunt Ariaentgen Claes lived in the house at the right with her children from about 1645 until her death in 1670. The painting reached the museum in 1921 as a gift from H.W.A. He painted a small number of interior scenes of middle-class domestic life, most often a single figure lit by a window on the left, rendered with an exacting stillness and costly pigments such as ultramarine.
