Signed and dated 1913 at upper right, the year Bauer illustrated the tale of Brother Martin.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eJohn Bauer (1882–1918) was a Swedish painter and illustrator, born in Jönköping, who studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm from the age of sixteen. A journey to Lapland produced watercolours for a book on the region published in 1908, and travels in Germany and Italy fed his interest in Renaissance art. He is known above all for his illustrations, mostly in watercolour and muted colour, for Bland tomtar och troll (Among Gnomes and Trolls), the annual collection of Swedish fairy tales, from 1907. In 1918 he drowned with his wife and son in a shipwreck on Lake Vättern. The Jönköpings läns museum holds over a thousand of his works, and he is represented at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePrinted as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
